Introduction to B.A. (Hons.) Philosophy

Introduction to B.A. (Hons.) Philosophy

This is a 3-year UG program that primarily focuses on the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind and language. Studying Philosophy enables you to think about some of the great philosophical questions, which we ask ourselves, in a clear, disciplined and systematic manner. It introduces you to ideas and theories propounded by some of the greatest philosophers of the past and present, and enables you to see connections between diverse areas of human experience. Philosophy also makes you more aware of the assumptions that form the basis of your beliefs.

B.A. (Hons.) Philosophy program at SGVU unites the theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline. The analysis of knowledge, and of how language shapes our world, is interwoven with political and ethical investigations, as well as with questions of how to live a good and just life. The act of thinking philosophically is practiced through a critical retrieval of the past. The program has been tailored to help students understand:

  • Philosophy as a foundation of all subjects
  • Philosophy as a framework
  • Philosophy being practical
  • Philosophy being truth conducive

This 3 year program dwells deep into the realms of Philosophy, with particular strengths in applied ethics and social/political philosophy. The interdisciplinary scope of this program is one of its salient features.
Students who complete their education with a Bachelor’s in Philosophy can think of working in quite a number of avenues, both in India and abroad. They can look for jobs across various sectors ranging from specialist in HR, consultant, student affairs, public service, journalism, research, law, diplomacy, insurance, etc.
The student should have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or equivalent grade in 10+2, in any discipline, to be eligible for this program.
