Eligibility - Engineering
Eligibility for GATE Qualified Candidates
Minimum Requirements for M.Tech. Admission:
1. Fresh Candidates: Candidates having valid
GATE score (qualified either in GATE 2008 or in GATE
2007), and
i. Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology , or
ii. Candidates yet to appear in the final examination
for the above qualifying degree (i) and whose results
are likely to be declared by July, 2008,or
iii. Associate Membership holders of the professional
bodies for admission into their
parent disciplines from the following:
• The Institution of Engineers (India) (AMIE)
• The Indian Institute of Metals (AMIIM)
• The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (AMIIChemE)
• The Institution of Electronics and Tele-communication
Engineering (AMIETE)
2. Candidates working in and sponsored (with full pay
and allowances for 24 months) by industry /
government organizations / private and public
enterprises / engineering colleges recognized by
AICTE possessing at least two years of professional
experience as on the last date of receipt of
applications at SGVU can apply, provided they hold :
i. B.E./ B.Tech. degree from a recognized
university with first class or 60% aggregate marks
in all the four years (no need of having GATE Score) ;
or
ii. AMIE and other Associate memberships (listed
above) with a valid GATE Score.
Please Note:
• Candidates applying for 'IC & SE' must have taken 'CS'
or 'IT' paper in GATE.
• Candidates applying for 'EE' must have taken 'ME',’EE’
paper in GATE. .
• All the candidates called for suitability test
(including BM and BI candidates) will have to appear for
the suitability test. (The exact date will be informed
to the candidates qualified during the Screening
Process) .

Financial assistance for M.Tech.Programmes
Selected GATE Qualified Candidates and IIT B.Tech.
Graduates admitted to M.Tech. programmes are eligible
for Financial Assistance.
1. Financial assistance in the form of Half-Time
Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) at the rate of
Rs.8,000/- p.m. (tenable for a maximum period of 24
months) will be awarded to Indian nationals doing the M.
Tech. Programmes subject to University rules. HTTA
students are required to assist the department for 8
hours of work per week related to academic activities of
the department such as laboratory demonstration,
tutorials, evaluation of test papers, seminars, research
projects, etc. The number of seats available under HTTA
are indicated in the 'Programmes' link.
2. A few assistantships may also be offered by some
government organizations such as Atomic Energy
Regulatory Board, and Aeronautic Research and
Development Board etc.
3. A few seats are available without HTTA (without any
financial assistance) in some M.Tech. streams as
indicated in the 'Programmes' link. The eligibility
criteria for with and without HTTA categories are the
same.
4. Provision exists for the candidates who have joined
M.Tech. streams under 'without HTTA' category to convert
to 'with HTTA' category at the end of one semester
depending on the vacancies in 'with HTTA' category and
on the basis of their performance in the first semester
examinations.
Admission to Ph.D Programs
Admission to the Ph.D. programmes is made on the
basis of written test / interview conducted by the
Department / Faculty concerned. Applications are invited
from candidates by advertising the programmes in
Employment News / leading Newspapers in the March for
the first semester and in October for the second
semester, every year.
Admission to Ph.D./M.S.(Research) programme is also
possible any time in the year through Department/Faculty
with the approval of the University Research Committee
for all categories of scholars. They can be allowed to
join any time though the course registration in such
cases will be possible only at the beginning of next
semester.
Admission is subject to vacancy being available in the
relevant specialisations.
Categories of Admission
• Full-time with Assistantship/without
Assistantship.
• Full-time with UGC/CSIR/QIP/FIP/Research Scheme
Scholarship.
• Sponsored - Full time & Part Time
• Self-financing Foreign National Students / Foreign
National Students with ICCR Scholarship.
Additional Requirements for Sponsored (Full-time and
Part-time) and Self Financing Students
• The candidates working in DRDO, CSIR laboratories,
ISRO, DAE will be considered under sponsored candidate
category and will not be required for course
registration and can work in their respective
laboratories provided a guide is nominated from the
respective laboratories. However, the candidates have to
present Six monthly progress report to the University
and will register in every semester.
• Sponsored Candidates (both full-time and part-time)
are required to submit a "Sponsoring Certificate" from
their employers on proper letter-head stating that for
the period of his /her studies in the programme, the
candidate would be treated as on duty with usual salary
and allowances and that he/she will be fully relieved
for the period of study for pursuing his/her studies and
that the fee of the candidate will be paid by the
sponsoring organisation.
• Self finance candidates can register for full time and
part time and will not be eligible for any type of
assistant ship and admission will be on the discretion
of the University academic committee .
Admission Schedule
Admission to Ph.D. programmes is made at the
beginning of the first as well as the second semester.
The students joining the Ph.D. programme in between a
semester will be allowed to register for the courses
only from the beginning of the semester following the
date of his/her joining.
The commencement of the doctoral programme is normally
from the date on which the candidate registers at the
University as a research scholar.
Registration for Courses
All postgraduate students are required to report for
central registration before the commencement of each
semester according to the schedule/procedure notified in
advance. The students register themselves for the
courses in consultation with the Course Coordinators at
the time of central registration. The courses to be run
by the Departments are made known to the students before
registration. Students are advised to ensure that they
report for registration each semester on scheduled dates
of registration in the beginning of each semester.
Late Registration
Late registration of postgraduate students due to
reasons beyond their control, would be permitted by
University Academic committee if so recommended by the
concerned Head of Department and on payment of late
registration fee as per university rules. The last date
for late registration will be one week from the date of
commencement of the classes.
The registration rules may be strictly applied to those
who have to take course work. Others, i.e., those who
have only to work on major project or Ph.D. thesis may
be allowed relaxation in terms of late registration
beyond the specific last date of the registration, up to
four weeks from that date provided the student had
informed the Head of the Department concerned before the
last date of registration of his inability to come to
the University, and provided the reasons given by him /
her are found to be satisfactory by the Head of the
Department concerned.
Addition/deletion of courses may be permitted in the
first week of the commencement of the semester with the
permission of the Course coordinator and approval of the
University academic committee.
Renewal of Registration
Every student/candidate on the rolls of the
University, whether full-time, sponsored or part-time
will be required to renew his/her registration in the
beginning of every semester till the completion of
his/her study programme to which admitted at the
University.
Eligibility Criterion
Degree: Ph.D.[ Full time.]
Minimum Eligibility: Masters degree in
Engineering/Technology or Masters degree in
Science/Humanities or equivalent in relevant discipline
with 60% marks in aggregate for general category.
Full-time students who do not possess M.Tech or
equivalent degree are required to have a valid GATE
Score
For Biomedical Engg., and Bio Informatics candidates
having M.B.B.S. with 60% marks or more are eligible
provided they have qualified ICMR. The Candidates having
Postgraduate degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD)/Master in
Surgery (MS) with 60% marks or more after MBBS will also
be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme in BME and
Bio Informatics Proogramme.
Selection basis: Written test and/or interview
Degree: Ph.D.[ Part time.]
Minimum Eligibility: Same as for Ph.D. full time and
minimum 2 years experience (this experience to be
calculated as on the first day of the semester to which
admission is sought -thus, for admissions in July, the
experience is to be calculated as of 1 Aug and for
admissions in December, the experience is to be
calculated as of 1 Jan of the next year) and No
Objection Certificate from employer. No GATE required.
Selection basis: Written test and/or interview
Degree: Ph.D. Sponsored: Fulltime
Minimum Eligibility: Same as for Ph.D. full-time
and Sponsoring Certificate from the employer,
